Abstract

The aim of this study was to examine arterial blood pressures during the inactive recovery period following supramaximal dynamic exercise.Nine male handball players (ages 21,5 ±1,5) performed Wingate Anaerobic Power Test (WAPT). Blood pressures and heart rate (HR) were taken before the test (Rest), immediately after the test (R0) and during inactive seated recovery period, respectively 3 minutes (R3), 6 minutes (R6), 10 minutes (R10), 15 minutes (R15), 20 minutes (R20) and 25 minutes (R25) after the test.

Systolic blood pressure (SBP) showed a significant increase immediately after exercise and did not indicate any significant decrease until the end of the recovery period, which lasted 25 minutes. Diastolic blood pressure (DBP) and mean arterial pressure (MAP) decreased 6 mmHg and 7 mmHg respectively at the end of the recovery period compared with the resting period (p<0.05). In conclusion. This study did not indicate any significant changes in SBP, during seated recovery that were reported in submaximal studies. Therefore the risk of hypotension and syncope after exercise are lower in trained individuals.
