Abstract

Movement dysfunction can present as a local problem (dysfunction of the recruitment and motor control of the deep segmental stability system resulting in poor control of the neutral joint position) or a global problem (imbalance between the mono-articular stability muscles and bi-articular mobility muscles with alterations in the functional length and recruitment of these muscles) though both frequently occur together. Movement dysfunction can be identified at segmental and multisegmental levels, the present article aiming to present the case of a cyclist with a multisegmental dysfunction of the lumbar spine. In this case, poor postural alignment, poor movement habits of lumbar spine and coxo-femural joint and high force repetitive overuse in cycling contribute to the development of global stability system dysfunction. The success of the management strategy of a chronic low back pain condition greatly depends on the accurate identification of the clinical problem, of the specific motor control dysfunction and of the correction of the faulty movement strategies.
