Abstract

Background. Type 2 diabetics are at increased risk for several cardiovascular risk factors like dyslipidemia and hypertension. Progressive resistance training (PRT) has positive effects on cardiovascular risk factors but its role in type 2 diabetics in Asian Indians has not been studied. Purpose of the study. To analyze the effects of PRT on cardiovascular risk factors in type 2 diabetics in Asian Indians.
Materials and methods. Twenty type 2 diabetic subjects (10males & 10 females) were randomly assigned to the PRT group (n=10) and control group (n=10). Subjects in the PRT group performed seven exercises for major muscle groups twice a week and control group continued with their medications for 16 weeks. Lipid profile, blood pressure (BP) and heart rate (HR) were measured at 0week and after 16 weeks of protocol.
Results. Total cholesterol levels (188± 16.6 to 149±6.9) and triglyceride levels (179±50.3 to 127± 6.2) decreased significantly (p=0.001) in PRT group. High density lipoprotein (HDL) increased by 17% in PRT group as compared to 1.9% decrease in control group. PRT group exhibited significant reduction in heart rate (p=0.01) by 17.8% and BP (p=0.001) by 7.1% in systolic blood pressure (SBP) and 9.7% in diastolic blood pressure (DBP). Control group showed no significant changes in BP and HR. Conclusion. Progressive resistance training is effective in improving cardiovascular risk factors in type 2 diabetics in Asian Indians.
