Abstract

Aim. The purpose of this study is to improve the quality of life of Cystic Fibrosis (CF) patients using a new strategy: individualized exercise training programme, chest physiotherapy and incentive training.
Material and Method. This 4 months prospective study was conducted in the II Paediatric Clinic and in the National Cystic Fibrosis Centre from Timisoara, on 20 CF patients, aged between 14 and 30 years.
We have used classic techniques of clearing, daily physiotherapy, sports programmes and incentive therapy. Before and after the treatment aside from the clinical and paraclinical aspects, we have also evaluated the functional respiratory parameters: maximum breathing pressure, forced expiratory flow (FEF25%-75%), forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1), forced vital capacity (FVC), body composition and lower limbs power and force.
Results. After combining those 3 techniques for 4 months we observed the substantial benefit in the clinical and body composition parameters. We also noticed the importance of the breathing and clearance techniques in the improvement of fitness level and functional respiratory parameters.
Conclusions. Chest physiotherapy, incentive techniques and individualized training must be included in the management programme of any patient with cystic fibrosis and must be conducted daily.
